Medical Students

First-year UC Irvine medical students take their first courses taught by the faculty of the Department of Biological Chemistry during the fall quarter.

The course curriculum provides training in biochemistry and molecular biology as it relates to the practice of medicine.

One of the major objectives of the course is to provide first-year medical students with a solid foundation in biochemistry and molecular biology that will serve them as they progress through their medical training and subsequently as practicing physicians.

Key topics covered include:

  • Structure and function of macromolecules
  • Metabolism
  • Cellular structures and processes
  • Systems-level biochemistry
  • Molecular biology

Course director: Rob Steele, PhD
Course coordinator: Barbara Shainberg
